Top 3 Ways to Calculate Freight Rates to Get More Shippers!

How Freight Brokers Can Easily Calculate Freight Rates for Shippers!

1. Use the load boards:, or are the two that I have used for years and highly recommend. Both of them have built in rating tools designed to give freight brokers market intelligence and to save a tone of time.

Most load boards with good rating data will require a subscription but if you are going to invest money invest it into things like load boards and rating tools that can help you make money.

2. Check lane history. Most load boards will give users the ability search a lane history.  This used to be one of my favorite ways to source carriers and get rates for any given lane.

Load board lane history will typically show carriers posting truck availability based upon specific lanes.  If they are posting their truck as available, they need/want loads in that lane give them call.

But rather than just focusing on that one load, be different and focus on developing a relationships with the carrier by asking good questions including “how can I help you?”

3. Post load/lane on the load boards.  If it is a desirable lane the phone will most certainly start ringing with carriers wanting your freight. During the call gather intelligence on both rates and availability. Some people don’t agree with this but if this is your only option it can work very well if you don’t mind taking a bunch of calls to gather some quick rating data.

In order to get shippers you will need to understand that rates are determined by supply and demand.  More specifically the ratio of trucks to loads in any given area/lane.  Due to advancements in technology it is easier than ever to understand this rates.

Can tariffs change rates day to day on the same load to the same customer?

Typically the rate you charge a shipper from day to day do not change unless there is a unique situation.
Now week to week or month to month is definitely possible.

That’s great that there are online networks that allow truckers to calculate freight rates and save time. My son is thinking about becoming a truck driver so he has been researching the basics of how to find jobs and calculate rates. I will let him know about online load boards so he can find more information all in one place.
