Freight brokers help shippers move freight from point A to point B by finding a trucking company that will haul the freight for slightly less than the shipper is willing to pay them... thus the term FREIGHT BROKER!
Here’s an example of how it works.
$2,000 Shipper Rate - $1,600 Carrier Rate = $400 Broker Profit!
In other words freight brokers, sometimes referred to as load brokers, truck brokers, or transportation brokers, are all middle men that match available shipper freight with available trucks while earning between 10% and 35% profit per shipment.
That means brokers typically earn between $100 to $500 per shipment but I’ve earned as much as $5,175 per shipment just for finding a truck to haul a customer's freight!
Just a side note, freight agents work under a licensed freight broker and earn from 50-70% of the profit they generate.
Fact is, neither brokers or agents actually see or handle the freight but are paid by shippers for every load help deliver.

What about the $75K broker bond requirement?
The freight broker bond is another area that we cover in great detail. The good news is, you DO NOT need $75,000 cash to get your broker bond. Getting a bond is not difficult if you have average to above average credit. If you have credit challenges, then we highly recommend starting as a freight agent, which does not require a broker bond or authority to get started.
I've been trucking for over 25 years. Is this something I can do too?
Absolutely. In fact, becoming a freight broker or freight agent is often the most sensible career change for owner-operators and company drivers alike. It allows you to embrace your experience and maximize your earning potential based on the knowledge you already have.
I am a licensed motor carrier. Can I append my new broker authority to my existing motor carrier authority?
Yes, you can. However, some carriers advise against this. Check with your carrier insurance company first to avoid any potential insurance issues. You may be better off setting up a separate freight broker authority to protect your carrier authority.
